Queenie Siu is the Head of Greater China Liquidity Solutions Sales and APAC Hedge Funds coverage at Goldman Sachs Asset Management. During her 2021 WiFA Spotlight Series, Queenie talks about her proud moment in her career, how she and Goldman Sachs continue to promote diversity and gender equality despite these massive changes and much more.
- Tell us a little bit about yourself
I currently head the Greater China Liquidity Solutions Sales and APAC Hedge Funds coverage at Goldman Sachs Asset Management, based in Hong Kong. In my role, I am responsible for helping clients in the region develop and fulfill their needs in liquidity and cash management strategies. I am also the co-chief of staff for the firm’s Asia Pacific Women’s Network, where we focus on bringing gender equity into the conversation, and to recruit, retain and develop women professionals. Before joining Goldman Sachs as an analyst in 2010, I started my career in the management associate program at Citibank, after graduating from The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
I am a people person, and fortunately my job allows me to travel extensively across the region and beyond. Travel, both professionally and personally has been an enriching experience for me, where I’ve been able to connect with inspiring people and work with clients, colleagues from diverse background and culture. It has been such a rewarding and humbling journey so far, and I look forward to continue venturing out into the world post the pandemic!
2. Tell us about a proud moment for you in your career?
I have always been a strong advocate of cross-collaborating with teams, divisions across the firm since I joined Goldman Sachs. I truly believe that we need to embrace a diverse set of perspectives and experiences and be collaborative in order to grow and succeed. I am always open to sharing ideas and promote inclusiveness with the goal of providing value-added solutions to our clients. For clients with bespoke needs, I always try to envision and think outside of the box, and leverage my resources and network to devise optimal solutions to meet their needs. Hence, when the firm formally launched an initiative to provide a more integrated approach to serving clients, I was very proud to be part of the core team to drive the efforts in Asia.
I was very fortunate that my focus and impact around this “One Goldman Sachs” (OneGS) strategy was recognized by our leadership teams – last year I was extremely honored and grateful to receive an award; not just because of the recognition but also because I felt I was able to act as an ambassador for advocating the firm’s core values of teamwork. I was also very happy to see the firm taking such a strong stance on embedding and cultivating this mentality within its people as this is one of my strong beliefs.
3. This year has brought tremendous upheaval and disruption to all aspects of our lives. How are you and your company continuing to promote diversity and gender equality despite these massive changes?
With the pandemic hitting every corner of the world, that has definitely changed our perspectives and priorities, however, I am so glad to see the firm and myself equally focused on important initiatives around diversity and gender equality. For example, the firm has just launched One Million Black Women, to pledge more than US$10 billion to advance racial equity and economic opportunity, with the goal to foster economic growth by providing women entrepreneurs around the world with capital and mentoring programs. With my sales role, I am very focused on educating my clients and advocating gender diversity through our strategies. I am very committed to developing our young women talents and mentees. Also, with my role as the co-chief of staff in the APAC Women’s Network, we have been working across different networks in the region to host events on the topics of diversity and inclusion by having women leaders, including CEOs and executives share their experiences as part of the advocates in driving diversity in every part of their works and lives.
4. Aside from work, what are your other passions?
I love being creative, having the opportunity to learn new things, and making new discoveries as part of my personal growth. I am incredibly passionate about cooking and baking where I can apply different elements of imagination, creativity throughout the whole process from preparation and trying out different cooking techniques, by reading and adapting different recipes, being inventive with ingredients and challenging myself by producing them from scratch. They are very therapeutic and satisfying pastime for me, as it allows me to turn something I have in my ideal mind into something tangible! Besides cooking and baking, I also enjoy playing tennis and watching movies. My all-time favorite movie is the amazing “Up” with the beautiful and magical balloons’ house, amused characters which delivered the profound meaning of compassion!
